Peanut Sauce Recipe (Freezer-Friendly & Easy)

By Cook Once. Eat Later. • Updated October 2, 2026

This freezer-friendly peanut sauce recipe is easy to make, packed with flavor, incredibly versatile, and freezes and reheats beautifully. It’s constantly requested in our household, and we use it on everything from noodle bowls and chicken dishes to beef, seafood, and tofu.

The inspiration for this sauce actually comes from a trip I took to Thailand with my spouse when we first started dating. We fell in love with so many of the local dishes, but the Thai peanut sauces really stood out to us. When we got home, I wanted to create my own version that captured some of those flavors while also being practical enough to freeze and use with a wide variety of meals.

Over time, this has become one of our favorite sauces to keep on hand. We don’t just use it for freezer meals either. We love making it in batches and freezing it into cubes, so we always have some ready to go when we’re cooking at home.

I’m going to show you exactly how to make it so you can stock your freezer with it too.

Why You’ll Love This Recipe

You’re going to love this freezer-friendly peanut sauce recipe for the same reasons we do. It’s comforting, creamy, savory, easy to make, and you can put it on almost anything.

One of my favorite things about this recipe is how easy it is to adjust the spice level. You can keep it mild or turn up the heat depending on what you’re making and how spicy you like your meals.

My family also loves how versatile it is. You can make one batch of peanut sauce and use it across a variety of meals, making it an easy sauce to keep stocked in the freezer.

Ingredients

  • ½ cup creamy peanut butter
  • 2 tablespoons soy sauce
  • 2 teaspoons rice vinegar
  • ½ teaspoon toasted sesame oil
  • 1 teaspoon sriracha, plus more or less to taste
  • ½ teaspoon grated ginger
  • ½ teaspoon grated garlic
  • 1 teaspoon brown sugar
  • ¾ cup coconut milk

Ingredient Tips

The Peanut Butter

Use creamy conventional peanut butter for this freezer-friendly peanut sauce recipe. I don’t recommend natural peanut butter because the oils can cause the sauce to separate, which is exactly what we’re trying to avoid with a freezer-friendly sauce.

The peanut butter is also what makes this sauce thick, so you’ll want to gradually cut it with the coconut milk and other ingredients until you reach your desired consistency.

The Soy Sauce

The type of soy sauce you use is completely up to you. I always use low-sodium soy sauce because I don’t need the extra sodium in my freezer meals. You still get plenty of flavor once it’s combined with the other ingredients.

Soy sauce also provides the umami that we talk about in some of our other recipes and freezer-meal articles.

The Acid

Rice vinegar adds the acidity this sauce needs to stay balanced. You can also use lime juice if you prefer.

Salt, acid, and fat all work together to balance a dish. The rice vinegar helps cut through the richness of the peanut butter and coconut milk.

The Brown Sugar

You can substitute honey or another sweetener if you prefer. I always use brown sugar because I like the subtle flavor it adds to the sauce while balancing the saltiness and acidity.

How to Make This Freezer-Friendly Peanut Sauce

Step 1: Prepare Your Ingredients

Start with mise en place. Grate your ginger and garlic, measure out all of your ingredients, and have everything ready before you begin. This keeps you organized and makes the process quick and easy.

Step 2: Warm the Peanut Butter

Add the peanut butter to a mixing bowl and warm it slightly in the microwave for about 10–15 seconds.

You don’t want it hot. You’re just warming it enough to soften the peanut butter and make it easier to mix with the other ingredients.

Step 3: Mix Everything Together

Add all of the remaining ingredients to the bowl and mix everything together until smooth and well combined.

There’s no specific order you need to follow here. Just add everything in and mix away.

Step 4: Adjust the Consistency

This is where you can make the sauce your own. You don’t want it to be so thick that it’s difficult to use, but you don’t want it to be soupy either.

Look for that perfect consistency where the sauce is creamy, smooth, and easy to pour or spoon over your meal.

Step 5: Taste and Adjust

Give the sauce a taste and adjust it to your preference.

Add more sweetness, acidity, salt, or heat depending on what you think it needs. You can also add more sriracha if you want to turn up the spice.

Step 6: Cool Before Freezing

If you’re using the sauce for freezer meal prep, allow it to cool completely before adding it to your meal or transferring it to the freezer.

This helps the sauce freeze properly and makes the thawing and reheating process easier later.

Pro Tips

Add Your Liquids Slowly

When mixing your sauce together, add the liquids gradually rather than dumping everything in at once. This makes it much easier to combine the ingredients and gives you better control over the final consistency.

Don’t just dump it all in. Do it with intention.

Taste and Balance

This recipe has all the components you’re looking for: sweet, salty, fat, and acid. The best part is that you can control each one to find the balance you like.

  • Too salty? Add a little sweetness or more peanut butter.
  • Too sweet? Add a little more rice vinegar or lime juice.
  • Too thick? Add more coconut milk.
  • Not spicy enough? Add more sriracha.

The sauce is incredibly customizable, so don’t be afraid to adjust it to your taste.

Make It Slightly Thinner for Freezer Meals

For freezer meal prep, I recommend making the sauce slightly thinner than you would if you’re serving it immediately.

The sauce can thicken a little as it freezes, thaws, and reheats, so starting with a slightly looser consistency can give you a better result when it’s ready to eat.

Don’t Skip the Acid

Make sure you include the rice vinegar or lime juice. The acidity is an important part of balancing the richness of the peanut butter and coconut milk.

Without it, the sauce won’t have the same balance and can taste much heavier.

What to Serve With

This freezer-friendly peanut sauce recipe is incredibly versatile and pairs well with all kinds of proteins, vegetables, and starches.

Proteins

  • Chicken
  • Beef
  • Shrimp
  • Tofu

Starches

  • Rice
  • Udon noodles
  • Other noodles

Vegetables

  • Broccoli
  • Bell peppers
  • Carrots
  • Edamame
  • Stir-fried vegetables

The list goes on, but these are some of my favorite combinations.

When using this sauce as part of a freezer meal, just make sure you’re choosing ingredients that freeze well and that you’re properly freezing, thawing, and reheating the meal.

One of my personal favorites is a peanut chicken and vegetable udon noodle bowl. The peanut sauce brings everything together and makes a great complete freezer meal.

How to Use Peanut Sauce for Freezer Meals

There are two different ways that I like to portion and store peanut sauce for freezer meals.

1. Add It Directly to Your Freezer Meal

The first option is to use our Freezer Meal System. Prepare the peanut sauce according to the recipe card, then use it to mix into your freezer meal or coat your meal components.

This helps distribute the flavor throughout the meal while also helping to preserve texture and prevent freezer burn.

2. Freeze the Sauce Into Individual Cubes

The second way I love to prepare and store this peanut sauce is by portioning it into individual cubes using a silicone freezer tray.

This allows you to freeze the sauce on its own and have individual portions ready to add to home-cooked meals whenever you need them.

The great thing about this method is how versatile it is. You can thaw and reheat the sauce before adding it to your meal, or you can simply toss a frozen peanut sauce cube directly into a stir-fry and let it melt and mix into the food as everything reheats.

It’s an easy way to keep homemade peanut sauce ready to go in your freezer.

Storage & Freezing

This peanut sauce is made to freeze and reheat well while preserving its texture and flavor.

Freezing

If you’re freezing this sauce, whether you’re storing it in individual cubes or using it as part of a complete freezer meal, I recommend using it within 2–3 months for the best quality.

After that point, you may start to notice some loss of texture and flavor, and the sauce might not give you the same results you’re looking for.

There isn’t a hard expiration date for this recipe in the freezer. This is simply the timeframe that I find works best in our household.

Refrigerator Storage

If you’re keeping the sauce in the refrigerator, I usually use it within 3–5 days as long as it’s stored properly in an airtight container.

Thawing & Reheating

How you thaw and reheat the sauce depends on how you’re using it.

Adding it to a stir-fry:If you’ve frozen the sauce in individual silicone cubes, you can add a frozen cube directly to your stir-fry. Let the heat from the dish melt and warm the sauce as everything cooks.

Using it as a topping or mixing it into a finished dish:I find it works best to let the sauce thaw in the refrigerator for a couple of hours before using it.

Reheating on the stovetop:You can also place the sauce in a small saucepan and warm it gently over low heat, stirring as it heats.
